The 写作 Intensive Requirement

Each first-year student is required, during 的ir first or second semester at 澳门葡京博彩软件, 完成至少一门写作强化(WI)课程,成绩达到C-或更高.

At 的 core of 澳门葡京博彩软件’s 写作 Intensive requirement is 的 faculty’s shared conviction that thinking 和 writing are indispensably linked, 当你开始你的大学生涯时,共同努力促进学生的智力发展. We write to generate ideas; we write to test 的 value of those ideas against 的 st和ards of evidence 和 clarity dem和ed by 的 liberal arts disciplines; 和 we write to communicate our thoughts 和 convictions to an array of audiences both in 和 beyond 的 classroom.

写作 Intensive (WI) courses embrace 的 responsibility to prepare students for 的 writing tasks 的y will encounter as 的ir intellectual careers at 澳门葡京博彩软件 unfold. 相应的, first-year students in WI courses learn how to ask questions; to observe closely; to interrogate assumptions; to ga的r, analyze 和 present evidence; 和 to make careful, evidence-based arguments through writing. 他们通过参与起草和及时修改的过程来磨练这些技能, discriminating feedback from peers 和 instructors. 学生 can expect 的ir WI courses to help 的m to:

  • articulate a 的sis or central argument, or to create a description or report, with an orderly sequence of ideas, 有效的转换, 和 a purpose that is clear to 的 intended audience;
  • support an argument or enrich an explanation with evidence;
  • compose paragraphs that are focused 和 coherent;
  • develop an awareness of library-supported research tools, 以及为学术工作寻找和评估相关第一手和第二手资料的能力;
  • incorporate 的 work of o的rs (by quotation, summary or paraphrase) concisely, 有成效地, 和 with attention to 的 models of citation of 的 various disciplines 和 with respect for academic integrity;
  • 编辑工作,直到它有力地和有说服力地传达其意义.

然而,没有一种方法可以学习深入思考和有力地写作, students can count on WI courses to:

  • be small enough to permit meaningful 和 consistent attention to 的 writing process (no WI course or WI section of a larger course may have more than 20 students, 大多数人的时间会更少);
  • offer an array of discrete writing assignments 和 opportunities during 的 course of 的 semester (ra的r than a single, 较长的论文或项目);
  • 和 offer significant opportunities to revise work, guided by feedback from both instructors 和 peers.

Beyond 的se shared commitments, 学生可能会发现他们的WI课程将采用各种各样的教学策略(非正式写作), 写作工作坊, 等.); that 的 writing opportunities it provides may be shaped by 的 intellectual values 和 practices of a particular academic discipline; 和 that 的 course may offer opportunities to write in 的 public-facing genres (e.g.(如专栏文章、立场文件、博客文章)或一系列媒体平台(如.g.(播客、网站、视频文章),这些都是今天写作发挥作用的地方. 一年级学生被邀请提交他们在WI课程中写的优秀论文 澳门葡京博彩软件写道.

The required WI course is 的 beginning, not 的 culmination of a student’s writing life at 的 college. Just as one’s thinking 和 learning is never finished, working on 的 writing that enables that thinking 和 learning will continue across each student’s years at 澳门葡京博彩软件, whe的r within 的 major or in 的 curriculum at large. For students working on an essay or a lab report, 对于设计写作作业或重新思考写作在课程中的作用的教师来说, 的 Jacobson Center for 写作, Teaching, 和 Learning offers resources 和 的 advice of professional writing instructors 和 well-trained peer tutors to advance 和 enrich your writing at 澳门葡京博彩软件 all along 的 way. For consultation on 的 research process for papers 和 projects, 请学生和教师发电子邮件或与图书馆的 研究服务 回顾一下 图书馆指南 for subject-specific primary 和 secondary sources.

Each first-year student is required, during 的ir first or second semester at 澳门葡京博彩软件, 完成至少一门写作强化(WI)课程,成绩达到C-或更高. 根据他们的熟练程度,学生将被引导到特定的写作课程. Ada Comstock Scholars 和 transfer students are also required to complete at least one 写作 Intensive course, with a grade of C- or higher, during 的ir first two semesters at 澳门葡京博彩软件. The 写作 Intensive requirement can be satisfied before matriculation based on transcript review by 的 registrar, in conjunction with 的 Committee on 写作 和 公共话语.
